12 Noises From the 1970s That Don’t Exist Anymore

On my paper route, I could hear the neighborhood wake up one house at a time. First an alarm clock got through a bedroom wall. Then a screen door gave one loose clap. A car tried twice before it started. Somewhere inside a house I had never entered, a telephone kept ringing.

In the 1970s, you heard these sounds without going looking for them. The phone dial spun back while you made a call. The filmstrip beeped in class. A gas-station bell rang when your tires crossed the hose. The machines still exist, but their sounds have mostly left everyday life.

The machines did half the talking. The people who dialed, threaded, rang up, and listened knew what every complaint meant.

1. The Rotary Dial Walking Back to Zero

Finger in the hole, dial around to the metal stop, let go. Tick-tick-tick. A 1 came home quickly. Zero took the scenic route. Miss the sixth digit and there was no backspace. You hung up and began again. A 1969 Princess telephone in the Smithsonian still carries the wonderfully possessive Bell System inscription: PROPERTY OF BELL SYSTEM — NOT FOR SALE.

Some telephone numbers were plainly worse than others. In a discussion about rotary phones, one person supplied a four-digit obstacle course:

“The last four of our number when I was a kid was 0989. It took FOREVER to call it and let the rotor go all the way back around.” (via Reddit)

Four slow digits in a row could make you resent your own relatives. Push buttons felt quick because each number ended when your finger came up. The old dial had to walk home before you could send the next one, and zero lived at the far end of town. The mechanism disappeared; the verb did not. We still dial a call with no dial in sight.

2. The Payphone Listening to Your Money

A payphone could tell a nickel from a dime by ear. Drop a coin and it struck a little gong inside. A 1972 Bell System coin-service manual explained the code: a nickel rang once, a dime twice, and a quarter made the low note. If the call failed, your money came rattling back. If somebody answered, the phone ate it.

Then came the expensive clunk. There went the quarter. Until that moment, both caller and coin were still hoping for the best. People counted the rings so an answering machine would not collect the money, then slapped the coin-return lever when the recorded instructions had been no help. A passerby might check the return cup without making a call at all. That was the smallest lottery in town, and the jackpot was twenty-five cents.

3. The 8-Track Changing Programs Mid-Song

The endless loop never asked to be rewound. Very convenient. It did, however, reserve the right to rearrange the middle of a song. At a program change, the head jumped to another pair of tracks. Clunk. A Library of Congress history of magnetic tape describes the cartridge’s four programs and puts the 8-track business at its 1978 peak at $1 billion. That bought America an impressive number of interruptions.

The machine always seemed to clunk just when the song reached the part you were waiting for. The music faded in mid-word, the head moved with a kluh-dunk, and a second or two came around for another try. Four programs had to share one album, and none of them had learned manners.

After enough plays, even the interruption became part of the remembered arrangement. One former 8-track listener still expects it while hearing the same album in another format:

“I was listening to this song today, and remember listening to this album on repeat in December in my youth on 8-track in the car. I still anticipate the pauses in the songs where they had to switch tracks.” (via Reddit)

The clunk was not the only guest. As a cartridge wore, another track could start whispering behind the one you had selected, like the next band warming up through the wall. The 8-track offered continuous music. It made no rash promises about orderly music.

4. The Typewriter Bell, Then the Long Return

Every key drove a typebar against ribbon and paper. Near the right margin, one bell rang. The typist finished the word and pushed the carriage home. Clack-clack-clack. Ding. Shhhh-clunk.

The public-domain 1923 book The Story of the Typewriter called the machine’s sound a “step-by-step ‘pulse beat’” and its handle the “familiar hand carriage-return lever.”

The bell did not mean you had written something good. It meant the right margin was near. Finish the word, grab the lever, shove the carriage back, keep moving. A manual machine also trained the fingers to strike as if every letter owed money. One former typist carried that pressure to a computer keyboard and was told by a younger coworker that the typing was too loud:

“I repeatedly got several offers from people to pay me to type up their papers. I do recall though a younger coworker saying I ‘typed too loud’ on a computer keyboard. This was clearly someone who had never heard a typewriter, especially of the manual variety.” (via Reddit)

There was no night mode and no gentle setting. In a shared house, somebody typing and somebody sleeping had to negotiate, and the typewriter brought a rack of small hammers to the meeting.

5. The Filmstrip Beep That Put Somebody to Work

The blinds came down. A record or cassette narrated. One still image waited on the screen.

Beep. Click. New picture.

A 1975 guide to producing sound filmstrips told the operator to advance the frame whenever the beep sounded. Some automatic projectors listened instead for an inaudible cue.

The beep put one student on duty. Miss it and the narrator marched ahead while the whole class stared at the wrong wolf. Getting picked still felt like a promotion, though the complete job description was TURN KNOB WHEN BEEP. In a discussion among former operators, one remembered the assignment and the film by name:

“It was one of the highest honors you could achieve as a young elementary school student. I still remember being the operator for ‘Peter and the Wolf’ in music class.” (via Reddit)

Later machines heard the cue and advanced the film themselves. Nobody asked the student operator to train a replacement.

Listen for the Signal

A 1975 education manual told the operator to advance the filmstrip at every audible beep on the soundtrack. Some later machines used a tone the audience could not hear to move the film automatically.

6. The 16mm Projector Finding Its Rhythm

Film had to hurry through the machine without being pulled hard enough to tear. A federal projection manual explained that the take-up reel’s own weight regulated a slipping device. Projectors earn sentences like that. The film crossed sprockets, a gate, and the sound head before finding the reel. The fan rushed. A loose reel chattered. Then every loop and tooth came to an agreement and movie day could begin.

Schools needed students who could thread the film and clear a jam. One former projectionist earned the job by passing a weekly spelling pretest:

“If you aced the spelling pre test on Monday, you could go to the library, and learn how all of the AV equipment worked. So, I did that, and got to run the projector during films. I occasionally got called out of class to fix a jammed projector in another class, or a slide projector.” (via Reddit)

The equipment differed from school to school, and an older Viewlex could make centering the frame a five-try affair for an untrained hand. A good operator made movie day look easy. A bad one gave Abraham Lincoln half a forehead.

7. The Carousel Dropping Another Vacation Slide

In a living room, the sequence never varied: fan, button, ka-chunk, white flash, picture. One mounted transparency lifted, the round tray moved a notch, and another relative appeared squinting into the sun.

One owner of a surviving family projector described the tray noise arriving with the warm smell from the fan. The machine came out after a trip, or when the company sitting in the room also happened to be trapped in the carousel. A slide show was part photography, part hospitality, and part test of how long friendship could survive Yellowstone.

Kodak’s company milestones date the Carousel’s introduction to 1961. The standard tray held 80 slides, which was capacity, not advice. A swipe makes less noise and no promise that everyone is watching.

8. The Gas-Station Hose Bell

Car enters. Ding-ding. Attendant appears. The service station had installed a doorbell under your tire. Roll over the rubber hose and a puff of air rang the bell inside the bay.

A former attendant explained that the hose could be adjusted and that the bell was treated as a call for service, not background noise:

“I worked in a full service gas station in the mid 70s, we had ours adjusted to where only a full size car would set it off. In fact, motorcycles and sometimes even small cars like VW Bugs would not! The owner of the station I worked at insisted that we acknowledge every ding-ding within 20 seconds. We were like Pavlov’s dogs.” (via Reddit)

The customer heard a welcome. The attendant heard a twenty-second clock. Out he came to pump the gas, check the oil, and look at the tires. The bell had charm only because somebody else did the running. Self-service changed the job as well as the noise.

9. The Credit-Card Imprinter Going Out and Back

Card in the metal bed, multipart form on top, handle across and back. Raised numbers pressed the account information through carbon paper. A manual imprinter held by the Smithsonian preserves the metal bed and sliding roller. No wire was needed, though authorization might still require a call.

The first pass scraped across the raised card. The return trip answered it. Stores supplied their own names because “manual imprinter” wasted a perfectly good noise. Chunk-ca-chunk told you how it worked before the clerk finished saying it.

The multipart slip kept making trouble after the handle stopped. Families warned cardholders to take the carbons rather than leave a readable account number in a wastebasket. The machine needed no electricity. Its security system was whoever had the sense to count the copies.

10. The Cash Register Before the Universal Beep

Before the scanner, a cashier entered each price. Keys went down, figures turned, paper advanced, and the drawer sprang open. The Smithsonian’s account of the first supermarket scanner dates the first Universal Product Code purchase, a pack of Wrigley’s gum, to June 26, 1974.

The bell was the victory lap. A mechanical register could keep working through a power failure with its hand crank, but it would not calculate the change. The cashier entered the sale, opened the drawer, and did the arithmetic. If the subtraction was wrong, the machine kept that opinion to itself.

Three Dates That Changed the Soundscape

  • April 27, 1973 — the U.S. ban on civilian supersonic flight over land took effect.
  • June 26, 1974 — the first UPC supermarket scanner entered service in Troy, Ohio.
  • June 12, 2009 — the full-power U.S. digital television transition was completed, taking analog broadcast snow with it for most viewers.

11. The Train’s Clickety-Clack Count

Why did the old rhythm keep such good time? A 1977 Department of Transportation report gives the standard rail length as 39 feet. Traditional track joined those separate rails with bars and bolts. Each wheel found each gap. Put enough wheels over enough joints and the railroad built its own rhythm section.

The sound traveled farther after dark. One person who lived about a mile from the tracks heard it only when the daytime noise had stopped:

“We used to live about a mile from RR tracks but at night, when all was quiet, I could hear the clickety-clack of the train and the occasional whistle, too. Never during the day when there were other noises but only late at night, when things were still.” (via Reddit)

Continuously welded rail removed most of the joints and with them most of the count. Jointed rail survives on some older and slower lines, but the tidy two-part rhythm is no longer guaranteed. A modern train still makes plenty of noise. It just fired the drummer.

12. The Sonic Boom the Government Chased Out of Town

By 1969, the U.S. Public Health Service was treating sonic booms as a community-noise problem that disrupted sleep, rest, conversation, and ordinary concentration. Some lost sounds deserve no campaign for their return. Faster-than-sound aircraft produced a boom across a broad area, and the shock could rattle windows.

In a discussion about hearing sonic booms as children, one person remembered the windows rattling near an Air Force base and asking a parent for an explanation:

“I remember hearing them occasionally and how it would rattle the windows. There was an air force base not too far away so maybe it was from that. I was really young but I clearly remember asking my mom what they were and her explaining it to me.” (via Reddit)

That mixture of excitement and alarm was the whole problem. The pilot got the speed. The town below got to inspect its windows.

Public reaction helped produce the federal prohibition on routine civilian supersonic flight over land, effective April 27, 1973. Military operations and authorized research continued. This sound was not simply outgrown; people argued about who had to live underneath it.

Every Noise Had a Job

These machines did not make noise just to announce themselves. The sound told you what to do next. The typewriter bell said the line was nearly over. The filmstrip beep said turn the knob. The driveway bell said a car was waiting. The cash drawer’s clang said the sale was finished.

That is what disappeared along with the clatter: a set of signals everybody understood. No screen lit up. No notification slid into view. A sound crossed the room, and the right person moved.

None of this made the old machinery better. An 8-track could interrupt the part you were waiting for, a worn tape could let another song leak through, and a sonic boom could rattle the windows. The machines had personality because you could hear the work happening: the dial returning, the card imprinter making its trip across and back, the projector settling into rhythm.
